The long running Monografie Lotnicze series begins its coverage of the classic Avro Lancaster with this volume. The text in this Monografie Lotnicze volume, like most others, is in Polish. The captions for the photographs and drawings are in Polish and English. This is Volume 1 of what looks to be a 3 volume set. The release rate can generously be described as glacial. This volume is copyrighted 2006 and we have yet to see volume 2.
Physically this volume is in the European standard A4 size (8-1/4" x 11-3/4"). It is square bound with 96 pages and two large size unbound foldouts. If buying second hand please inquire if the foldouts are still with the book as they offer most of the value for English speakers.
This volume is basically a history of the British Avro firm including its Canadian branch. There is a brief chapter on Avro's pre-WWII activities. This is followed by the meat of the book which is a chapter on the Lancaster's predecessor, the Manchester and a chapter on the Lancaster proper. Following are chapters on camouflage and markings, the Lancaster civil derivatives (Lancastrian, York, Tudor, Ashton), the Lancaster successor Avro Lincoln, and finally postwar Avro aircraft and projects (Shackleton, Vulcan, CF-100, CF-105, Avro 720).
The two large foldouts respectively have color profile (1/72nd scale) and plan (1/96th scale) drawings of the various Manchester and Lancaster marks and 1/72nd scale line drawings of the Manchester and Lancaster. They are superbly done in the manner we've come to expect from AJ Press.
All in all, the English speaker is not well enough served with this volume unless he can find it at a bargain price (like I did). The modeller might be more generous.
